Interim Roxaboxen with Mrs. Cassman

Students who remain on campus during St. Cecilia Academy’s Interim program have a number of unique courses to choose. One of these is “Roxaboxen” which is based on the book of the same name by Alice McLerran. The premise is to encourage students to use their imaginations to create buildings made from limited resources. We asked SCA Latin and Spanish teacher, Kathleen Cassman, about the program and what she hopes the students learn.
Cassman was inspired to offer the course based on her exposure to the book years ago. “I was introduced to the book when I was working for a summer program with middle and elementary school children. The book is about neighborhood children using nature (rocks, sticks, etc.) and throw-away items from around their homes, like cardboard, to create a small town on an empty lot. The children had space for individual creativity, as well as an opportunity for cooperation.”

As part of the class, the SCA students will read the book and discuss their own childhood memories of creative play. There will be planning time with most of the class period spent on creation. “I am hoping students will practice their social and problem-solving skills. The materials are intentionally very limited, and the need for imagination will be high,” stated Cassman. “The only goal is to build your own space from cardboard and simple craft materials. There are no requirements beyond that.”

Cassman believes the class is important for St. Cecilia students to experience because of the importance of play at any age. “I want to encourage students to create and play without any stress, to be imaginative, and to connect in a face-to-face setting,” she said. “The importance of free play is not limited to very young children.”

The Roxaboxen buildings will be available for others to view as Cassman intends to invite students from Overbrook Catholic School to tour and play in the finished town. Be sure to check St. Cecilia’s social media channels during the week of January 6 to see Roxaboxen in action.
