Athletics at St. Cecilia Academy

Athletics and Wellness Philosophy
St. Cecilia Academy supports every student in her journey as she grows in mind, body, and spirit while discerning the gifts bestowed on her by God. St. Cecilia girls gain a solid intellectual foundation and strong faith formation and learn essential life skills through our athletics and wellness programs.  Designed specifically for women, these programs provide valuable benefits for girls and are a vital component of their overall development, positively impacting their physical, mental, and social well-being. The skills learned and friendships made last beyond the halls of SCA.

Opportunities for Every Girl
Research shows that being involved in sports, either competitively or recreationally, helps young people develop good time management, strengthen relationships, grow in confidence, and foster virtues unique to athletics. St. Cecilia provides a nurturing environment where every girl – whether a seventh grader or a senior – has the chance to try new sports and be part of a team. Physical education and strength training classes hone valuable skills, develop physical strength and coordination, build camaraderie, and contribute to greater confidence and overall well-being.

Virtues in Action
In our classrooms, girls learn about the virtues; on the fields and courts, they have opportunities to practice them. Being part of a team offers student-athletes a valuable training ground for virtue. More than 67% of St. Cecilia students participate in one of 14 sports offerings. Not only can athletics encourage a girl to grow in self-knowledge by discovering the gifts God has given her, but she can also discover her potential as a generous, joyful, and reliable leader for others.  Healthy competition helps foster the virtues that will help her grow into a mature, confident woman:
• Forgiveness
• Fortitude
• Generosity
• Humility
• Patience
• Prudence
• Resilience
• Respect
• Self-Control
• Self-Discipline
• Sportsmanship
It was a good reminder that whenever we play on the basketball court, we are playing for a cause greater than ourselves, and these games allowed us to glorify God and others through our talents on the court.
