Honors

2023-2024 Honors Week

The Valedictorian for the Class of 2024 has a schedule brimful of honors and AP classes, and she has earned an extremely impressive GPA. A four-year member of the Principal’s List, she has also earned awards for multiple courses, including AP Calculus AB and French Pre-AP. In addition to achieving a perfect score on the ACT Reading section, she can claim yet another rare accomplishment: earning a math ACT score of 35 on her very first attempt!

When our Valedictorian participated in Governor’s School for the Humanities, her professors described her as “delightful,” “academically superior,” and “the kind of student professors love to have in class.” An SCA teacher reports that she almost always broke the curve on tests, while another describes her as “thought-provoking, creative, and downright fun.”

This would be enough to keep anyone busy, but our Valedictorian can also be found winning a nomination for the Spotlight Awards, attending the Notre Dame Summer Scholarship program, logging over 50 hours of service for the Dominican Cross award, and serving as a club officer for Theatre Guild, the National Honors Society, and participating in Mu Alpha Theta, the French Honor Society, Service Club, Student Council, choir, and the Ambassador Board. She is, perhaps, most recognizable as one of our acting stars, leading several Theatre Guild shows including Annie and Little Women.

A good student, a good artist, a good leader, and a good friend, our Valedictorian has blessed our halls for four years, and while we are sorry to have her go, we wish her all the best as she continues her adventures studying at Georgetown University, where she will major in government and philosophy and minor in math. Congratulations to the Valedictorian of the Class of 2024, Miss Elizabeth Winston Adler!
From her very first days at Saint Cecilia Academy, the Salutatorian for the Class of 2024 has distinguished herself by an impressive array of honors and AP classes, earning a nearly perfect GPA along the way. She has been described both as “the absolute best of high school science students” and as “one of our best math students.” As a sophomore, our Salutatorian made SCA history by becoming the first Scarab to enroll in both AP Biology and Chemistry Honors at the same time. Since then, she has continued to excel in her studies, consistently appearing on the Principal’s List and earning awards for several classes, including AP Chemistry and U.S. History. During the summers, our Salutatorian spends her time studying environmental science, neuroscience, and psychology at Sewanee and Belmont University.

Outside the classroom, our Salutatorian can be found playing on the varsity volleyball court, building robots, earning the Dominican Cross Award, and serving as Vice President of the National Honors Society and as Secretary of the Baking Club.

In addition to her outstanding gifts of intellect, athleticism, and leadership, the Salutatorian is also marked, in the words of one teacher, by “humility, gentleness, respect for her peers, [. . .] and love for people.” These most priceless gifts will make her a true asset to her next school, as she plans to study bioengineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Congratulations to the Salutatorian of the Class of 2024,
Miss Annika Claire Slinger!
The title of St. Cecilia Girl is the highest honor St. Cecilia Academy confers on a student. By a vote of the juniors and seniors, with faculty approval, a senior who best exemplifies the ideals of St. Cecilia Academy is chosen. The St. Cecilia Girl is also the recipient of the Lisa Elcan Bruner Memorial Scholarship. Lisa Elcan graduated from St. Cecilia in 1973, when she, too, was named St. Cecilia Girl. Lisa died in 1993, and her family began a scholarship fund in her honor because of Lisa’s love and dedication to St. Cecilia.

This year’s St. Cecilia Girl has been described as “disciplined,” “motivated,” and “dedicated.” Throughout her time at St. Cecilia Academy, she has applied herself to her studies with diligence and hard work, appearing on the All-Year Honor Roll. Additionally, she is a member of the National Honors Society.
In her studies, our St. Cecilia Girl excels, especially in Latin. She has served as the Treasurer and the Secretary for the Latin Club, helping to foster student appreciation for classical language and culture. Additionally, she is a talented visual artist, receiving the Student Collection Award for her painting “Lemons.” “Lemons” will be on display at Saint Cecilia for years to come, continuing our SCA Girl’s artistic legacy.

In addition to her scholastic prowess, her active involvement in student life, and her artistic excellence, our St. Cecilia Girl is also a champion rower, having participated in the Nashville Rowing Club for several years. Her gifts are especially evident in this sport, as it requires tremendous dedication to teamwork and collaboration. Our SCA Girl is a true team player, never seeking the spotlight for herself but always happy to work hard for the good of her team, her class, and her school. We are so proud of her and wish her all the best as she continues her adventures, studying and rowing at Columbia University.
Now it is my pleasure to present her to you as the 2024 St. Cecilia Girl and the recipient of the Lisa Elcan Bruner Scholarship Award,
Miss Kathryn Nell Miller

She is an active member of the service club during the school year and spends her summers continuing to serve others at Camp Barnabas, a week-long camp in Missouri for individuals with disabilities. • 2023-2024 Yearbook Dedication

This year's yearbook is dedicated to Mr. Thornton in recognition of all he does for SCA.  He has devoted many years to St. Cecilia girls, teaching classes like Foundations of Data Analysis and AP Statistics. Recently, he took up the job of Security Deputy to ensure the safety of all faculty, staff, and students.
As a proud father of an SCA alumna, he understands how special of a place it is to everyone on campus and works tirelessly to maintain that significance in everyone’s life.
He has a shared love of many things with students on campus: SCA, math, and the Tennessee Volunteers. You can find him writing, “GO VOLS!” on the whiteboard in his classroom every Friday afternoon during football season and then talking about different moments from the game with his students the following week.
This educator enjoys the outdoors, going on camping trips with his wife, and visiting his children. He has great friendships with many staff members, one of whom said, “We both started teaching here at St. Cecilia in the Math department for three years, and it’s been very fun to work alongside him for the past few years.”
We asked some staff and students to share what they love most about Mr. Thornton. Abby Miller and Sophi Stankiewicz said, “He cares about our future and always wants to help us succeed.” Coach Jemison shared, “He has a quiet confidence about him, and he’s a very welcoming guy that we can talk to, and all around a great colleague.”  Deciding on this yearbook for Mr. Thorton was a no-brainer because it is a tribute to his commitment to St. Cecilia and passion for teaching his students.

The Pillar of Community

Teacher of the Year

List of 1 items.

  • 2024 Teacher of the Year

This year’s Teacher of the Year has a reputation for her engaging classes, which enkindle in students a love for the intellectual life, in particular, through literature. She received a BA in English from Southern Catholic College and her Master’s degree in teaching from Aquinas College. This teacher is a true team player and a part of the SCA community in and out of the building.

If you need a few more clues about her, she teaches in the English department and has previously helped with Sodality and the sophomore Service retreat. She enjoys helping students find their voice in written form, whether through essays, projects, journalism, or the yearbook.

Please join me in congratulating our 2023-2024 Teacher of the Year: Pamela Woosley.

Leadership

List of 11 items.

  • Best All-Around Freshman Award

The St. Cecilia Academy Best All-Around Freshman must maintain a good academic performance and be involved in extracurricular activities. In all these endeavors, she must exemplify honesty, courtesy, helpfulness, and manners and have a positive attitude.

This year’s honoree quickly entered herself into the SCA culture when, in mid-July, she began to practice with the golf team and, with hard work, much of it after practice, she entered the competition, playing the team’s third position.

With the beginning of classes in August, the faculty was soon impressed by her positive, encouraging, want-to-learn, work-hard attitude. Teachers found that she had a presence before adults, authority figures, and peers.  For her selfless, put others first personality, she was honored with a first-semester Torch Award!
During the passage of the fall days, our best all-around became involved in the Chess Club, The Adventure Club, The Theater Guild, and the Student Council.

As spring approached, she found herself attracted to lacrosse, where she volunteered to play goalkeeper, a new position. Again, after practice work, sharpening her skills was put in place to enable our honoree to help her team.

In spite of all of this, beyond the classroom activity, our hard-working awardee is able to put together an upper-level academic position,

Best All-Around Freshman is Elsa Anderson
  • Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizenship Award

The Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizenship Award is presented each year to the student who has best demonstrated a love of country and good citizenship. This year’s recipient has interned with Power Youth at the Nashville Chamber of Commerce and the Nashville Department of Transportation.  Her study in AP Government and AP US History and her commitment to cultivating her own political knowledge and active citizenship make her an ideal recipient of this award. Congratulations, Emillie Cox
  • George Cate Civitan Honor Key

Servant leadership in the community is sometimes referred to as “good citizenship.”  The Nashville Civitans are proud to honor some of this area’s most outstanding high school students with their Honor Key Award. The students who receive this award have already excelled as leaders in their high schools and show great potential for doing the same in their adult communities.

This year’s Civitan Honor Key Award goes to a young woman for whom leadership is a natural gift. She excels both in the classroom and in many activities supporting the school, which she does with humility and poise. Her teachers and peers all testify to her loyalty and reliability. Her willingness to serve others and help wherever it is needed makes her a fitting recipient of this honor.

Congratulations to this year’s George Cate Civitan Honor Key winner, Maggie Niesen.

However, Lilly Anna's organization skills and zeal for SCA enabled her to lead her class effectively and make this year one they will never forget.
