Interim: Scientific Inquiry in Medicine with Charles Martinez
The St. Cecilia Academy Interim experience exposes students to career opportunities whether inspired in the classroom or through one of many professional internships. Returning this year is “Scientific Inquiry in Medicine” which provides an overview of some of the foundational tools used by the medical profession. We asked Science Department Chair, Mr. Charles Martinez, about the course and how it fits within the way St. Cecilia teaches the sciences.
“The way we approach science at St. Cecilia parallels the structure and function of how the discipline evolved in history from physics to chemistry to biology much of it supported by Church leaders,” said Martinez. “We have students who take the curriculum offered and decide to explore beyond the classroom, including independent study programs covering topics such as antibiotic resistance, alternate ways to reduce greenhouse gases, and controlling invasive plants through natural remedies.”
As a faculty member, he has found the SCA students to be curious and eager to learn. In speaking with those in his classes, the study of medicine was a popular topic that he knew could be addressed at an introductory level through Interim. The course includes a combination of lab experiments, note taking, and medical case study videos.
After receiving a file folder, lab coat, and stethoscope on day one, the students are assigned to small groups to discover how to take vital signs as well as the science behind some of the measurement tools. During the next few days, they will experience areas such as DNA extraction, discussing methods of History and Physical, writing SOAP notes, DNA gel electrophoresis and fingerprinting, and much more.
Martinez said his goal is for each student to have a better understanding of some of the medical basics, know common medical terminology, and have hands-on experiences. “As girls ponder a career in medicine or in research, having an experience like this can aid them in their journey. Many SCA Alumnae cite their Interim experience as a catalyst for their own careers, and I am happy to help them along the way.”
